About
Born in the small country town of Junee, Joey Skewes found music long before he found his voice. His childhood was shaped by afternoons spent relentlessly practicing drums at home, followed by Sundays playing beside his father in their church band — an early experience that intertwined music with faith, emotion, and community from the very beginning.
After moving to Wagga Wagga during his teenage years, Joey’s musicianship deepened through school bands, formal drum lessons, and countless hours spent alongside his brother, a gifted guitarist whose influence would quietly shape Joey’s future as a songwriter. Though drums remained his first instrument, graduation marked a pivotal shift: the drum kit was exchanged for a guitar, and songwriting slowly became the centre of everything.
This transition led to the formation of Arcade, a band created with a close friend and drummer. Serving as the band’s primary songwriter, vocalist, and rhythm guitarist, Joey wrote emotionally driven songs that blended vulnerability with intensity. The band performed extensively along the east coast of New South Wales and independently released six tracks, building a sound rooted in honesty and raw expression.
After relocating to Newcastle for university, Joey began writing music that was increasingly intimate and spiritually grounded. Motivated by his faith in Jesus, his songwriting turned toward themes of grief, loneliness, hope, heartbreak, and redemption. His debut solo single, and he with me — recorded entirely on a phone in his bathroom — introduced listeners to a deeply personal and unfiltered style that resonated far beyond its modest beginnings.
He later released the extended single someday, for something, a three-song collection reflecting on loss, sadness, and the search for meaning within suffering. Now preparing to release six new songs beginning June 12, Joey continues to create music that confronts human fragility with sincerity while pointing toward hope through faith.
Blending atmospheric indie textures with deeply confessional lyricism, Joey Skewes creates songs that feel less like performances and more like conversations — intimate reflections suspended somewhere between heartbreak and belief.
For those wanting to follow the journey more closely, the mailing list offers a quiet space beyond social media — a place for early access to new music, unreleased ideas, intimate updates, show announcements, and reflections behind each release. As new songs begin arriving from June 12, subscribers will be the first to hear what’s coming next and the stories that shaped them. If you connect with honest music rooted in vulnerability, loss, faith, and hope, this is where those conversations continue.
